Developing Future-Ready Students
Develop the Future is a semester-long program that gives high school students the opportunity to learn alongside industry experts to prototype and pitch an app of their own creation.
This project supports building and enhancing critical skills related to mobile computing, software engineering, UX/Ul design, and presentation delivery, all of which give students an edge in applying to associated post-secondary programs and Canada's tech-driven workforce. This program is offered in hybrid environments, based on the school, instructor, and mentor needs.
Program Summary
Using a Mac* and free Apple resources, students will:
be introduced to Swift programming language in Xcode with support from educators and industry experts
learn about inclusive app design including accessibility features
participate in workshops to build an effective brand, use professional networking tools, and develop presentation skills
prototype and pitch their very own app, using Xcode for coding and Keynote for presenting their ideas in a visually engaging way
*Mac must run on macOS Monterey 12.5+.
Program Design
Throughout the program, teachers will:
participate in virtual professional learning experiences that provide just-in-time supports
connect with and have access to various industry mentors
receive a set of curriculum resources aligned with Develop the Future
have the opportunity to connect with other educators from their province who are also running Develop the Future in their classes
Educator Requirements
& Resources
While in the program, students are given the option to write the App Development with Swift certification through Certiport.
Upon completion, students receive credit* for their high school course, a Develop the Future certificate, and a resume asset to support their college-university or job applications.
*Type of credit is dependent upon the province and/or district's level of program.
Student Benefits
Industry mentors are critical to the success of Develop the Future. In order to fairly compensate them for their time and expertise, there is an enrolment fee* attached to the program. For larger cohort enrolments, leaders are obtaining funding from various sources, including STEM Ministry grants.
*This program is also available in the month of July as a compacted, full-time work experience. The cost for enrolment in the summer program is $350.00 per student.
